thoughts about cd
design
(for the cover and the
whole package)
If you
have a look in Michael Ochs' book "1000 Record Covers"*
you can easily imagine how difficult it is to find a good design
idea for a cover or 'sleeve' design that fits the musicians or a
specific style of music (sampler e.g.).
Many musician or bands are
fixed on the production of their music - the art work comes at the
last moment and as a sort of 'package' to put the cd in something
before it reaches the customer. Record companies think in many cases
in the same way, too.
You will also find the
opposite way: musicians are too fixed on themselves and (proud) that
they want to get 'visualized' on their package of the music
production.
... understandable.
If you stroll through the
really big record stores, and have a closer look, you can see the
results of the so called 'last minute packages' - or cover done with
unkindness. Although, there is the question of the budget for the
artwork - no doubt.
But what makes a good and
outstanding design?
will be continued soon
