Notes: 12)

Laurie cites the discovery of specimens of the
cauterium, for example in the grave of a woman
painter at St-Médard in France, of the 4th or
5th century (Materials, pp. 55-56): these are
long, thin bronze instruments, flattened at one
end and spoon-shaped at the other. Borg considers
that the find's location and date render it of little
ignificance. Whatever the case may be, the cauterium
would have been made of
metal and could be used
heated or cold.
