Notes: 17)
This
technique is documented and favoured by
the Greek painter Andreas Fokas.
He made coloured
wax sticks, constructed a heated palette of metal,
and
painted portraits from life which come very
close to the Fayum
portraits. The painter G. Mavroides
used a double-boiler to keep the
metal palette warm
over boiling water, thus maintaining a constant
emperature and preventing the pigments from
darkening through excessive
heating. Both artists
generously shared their knowledge with me in
great detail.
