Lucas (Materials,
p. 351) asserts that turpentine
and linseed oil were not used for
painting during
the period in question, even though they were
available
for other uses. However, this is not
conclusive evidence, since neither
of these two
substances, had it been used in antiquity, would
necessarily have left traces detectable today.
Turpentine was known in
Greece in Classical
times, if not earlier, while linseed oil was one
of
Egypt's main products, so the probability
of its use in the Punic wax
mixture is not at all
remote.
