Encaustic painting on a linen shroud

A woman, Antonine, ca. 138-192 AD. Encaustic on linen. We see here a very specific individual. The painting is done entirely with brushes, as the hard tool is unsuitable for work on linen, and the effect is of an oil painting. Warm ochre pinks in the lit parts of the face are contrasted with heavy shadows.
