A woman, 'Isidora', late Hadrianic - early Antonine, ca. 130 - 161 AD. The image of a great lady, notable in many ways: the remarkable condition of the painting, her rich and varied jewelry, and the clavi painted on the shroud itself. The flesh area is covered with painted-on shadows, and there is a touch of reflected light under her chin.
The name of the woman, Isidora, is written on the cartonnage, or linen mummy case.
Encaustic and gilding on a wooden panel wrapped in linen.
