Example of preliminary sketching

A woman, time of Cligula-early Claudian, ca. 37 - 50 AD.

This portrait exudes an impression of vitality and sensuality through the sitter's sideways glance and the lush texture of the paint.

A technical point to note is the underdrawing visible where the paint has flaked off her garments.
