Encaustic painting - example of the hard tool used

The colour harmonies in this remarkable painting are beautiful and unique, the transparent purple of the draperies, used also on the lips and cheeks, complemented by the green of the necklace. The artist has worked from a dark ground up to the deftly applied highlights, then worked from light back to dark with masterful modelling strokes of the hard tool.
