LOUIS Morris, (Morris Louis Bernstein)
born 1912 Baltimore (PA) - September 7, 1962 Washington.
American painter.

 

 
1927-1932

Studied at Maryland Institute of Fine and Applied Arts.
 
  1936-1943 From 1936 to 1943 he lived in New York, then moved to Baltimore.
 
  1952 Finally settling in Washington. Led a workshop at the Center of the Arts in Washington and became friends with Kenneth Noland.
 
  1953 Reintroduced to New York by the young Kenneth Noland and the art critic Clement Greenberg; met Helen Frankenthaler and was impressed by her way of using color in that unique style. Breakthrough with his own style.
 
  1953-1954 - first 'Veils' series.
 
  1955-1957 His paintings were closer to cubism and current abstract expressionism; most of these he subsequently destroyed.
 
  1958 - returned to the large 'Veils' series, encouraged by Clement Greenberg.
 
  1959/1960 - 'Florals' series.
 
  1960 - 'Unfurleds' series.
 
  1961/62 - 'Stripes' series.
 
  1964 Paintings participate in documenta 3 in Kassel.
 
  1968 Paintings participate in documenta 4 in Kassel.
