Studied at Maryland Institute of Fine and Applied Arts. |

1936 to 1943 he lived in New York, then moved to Baltimore. |

settling in Washington. Led a workshop at the Center of the Arts in
Washington and became friends with Kenneth
Noland. |

| 1953 | Reintroduced
to New York by the young Kenneth Noland and the art critic Clement
Greenberg; met Helen Frankenthaler
and was impressed by her way of using color in that unique style.
