Cobra
An
international association of artists that existed in
Europe from 1948 to 1951. The name Cobra was made up
from the first letters of the cities in which the
original members of the association were living
(Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam). Cobra artists
promoted free expression of the unconscious and they
used thick handling of paint and striking colours to
give their work vitality and force. They included in
their paintings fantastical imagery derived from
Nordic folklore and from mystical symbols, rather
than purely abstract forms.
Representative
painters:
Alechinsky, Appel, Jorn
