Color-Field
painting
A
form of Abstract Expressionist painting which
emphasized the use of colour, rather than gesture, as
the principal means of expression. Colour-field
paintings are characterized by expanses of intense
and saturated colour and typified by the work of
Rothko, Newman and Still. These artists' rejection of
expressive brushstrokes helped pave the way for
PostPainterly Abstraction and
Minimalism.
