Expressionism
An
artistic force concentrated mainly in Germany from
1905 to 1930. Expressionist artists sought to develop
pictorial forms which would express their innermost
feelings rather than representing the external world.
Expressionist painting is intense, passionate and
highly personal, based on the concept of the
painter's canvas as a vehicle for demonstrating
emotions. Violent, unreal colour and dramatic
brushwork make the typical Expressionist painting
quiver with vitality. Vincent van Gogh, with his
frenzied painting technique and extraordinary use of
colour, was the inspiration for many Expressionist
painters.
