Futurism
An
avant-garde movement founded in Milan in 1909 by the
Italian poet Filippo Marinetti. Its members aimed to
liberate Italy from the weight of its past and to
glorify modernity. The Futurists were fascinated by
modern machinery, transport and communications. In
painting and sculpture, angular forms and powerful
lines were used to convey a sense of dynamism. One of
the main features of Futurist art was its attempt to
capture move ment and speed: this was usually
achieved by depicting several images of the same
object or figure in slightly differing positions all
together, giving the impression of a flurry of
movement.
