Independent
Group
A
loose body of British artists, including Hamilton and
Paolozzi, who used to meet at the Institute of
Contemporary Arts in London in the early to
mid-1950s. Their meetings covered many
interdisciplinary subjects, particularly science and
technology, music, theatre and art. Together they
were responsible for introducing the notion of
popular culture and mass media to British art,
organizing a landmark exhibition called This
is Tomorrow at the Whitechapel Art Gallery
in London, which focused on the subject of
contemporary life, and prompted the birth of Pop Art.
