Orphism
A
term used by the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire in
1913 to describe the work of Delaunay, which he saw
as a new type of abstract art which was not based in
reality, but had its own, independent language.
Delaunay was interested in the effect of different
colours on the canvas and produced a series of
paintings which explored the emotional impact of pure
colour. He adopted Apollinaire's term and developed
his theories into the movement of the same name,
along with his wife Sonia.
