Situationism
A
radical artistic movement formed in Europe in 1957
which aimed to upset the establishment. While having
no one style, the Situationists shared certain common
views, believing that capitalism had turned
spectators into passive consumers of media imagery.
To counter this, they had to resort to revolutionary
strategies to force people to look at art in a new
way, They proposed an art which overturned
traditional notions of authorship and questioned
established art contexts. Their ideas were
disseminated principally through the writings of Guy
Debord. Involved in the French general strike of
1968, the Situationists influenced a number of
artists to focus on the relationship between
politics, ideology, art and social change.
