Spazialismo
An
avant-garde movement founded In 1946 by the Italian
artist Fontana. Trying to break away from the
two-dimensional plane of a painting. Fontana made
holes or cuts In his canvases in his attempts to
bring real space into his work - hence the name
'Spazialismo', which translates as 'Spatialism', He
also made a 'Black Spatial Environment' in 1947, a
room painted black, which predates Installation
Art. His cerebral approach to painting helped
pave the way for Conceptual
Art.
