Tachisme
A
tendency in European painting in the 1950s and 1960s
which formed part of the Art Informel
movement. Taken from the French word 'tache', meaning
'blot', and first used by the French critic Charles
Estienne in the early 1950s, Tachisme is close to
Abstract Expressionism, and is characterized by
abstract spots and stains of colour applied to the
surface of the canvas.
The American name of the same movement was Action Painting.
