The
Viennese Secession
An
avant-garde group founded in 1897 by the artist
Klimt. Its aim was to break away from the established
artistic bodies and raise the level of production of
arts and crafts in Austria to that of other European
countries. Many of the group were based at the
movement's headquarters, the Viennese Workshop. The
Secession style was close to Art
Nouveau. Other
Secession groups were formed in Munich and Berlin at
around the same time.
