DUBUFFET, Jean; 1901 Le Havre - 1985 Paris
French painter.

 
  1918 After a two-year course in painting at the academy in Le Havre, went to Paris to study at the Academic Julian. Met Suzanne Valadon, Max Jacob, Leger and Duty.
 
  1924 Worked as a technical draughtsman in Buenos Aires.
 
  1925-32 Gave up his artistic ambitions to work in his father's wine business.
 
  1933 Took up painting again.  
  1944 First solo-exhibition at the Rene Drouin Gallery in Paris.  
  1945 Started to collect Art Brut, paintings by children and mental patients.  
  1947 Founded the Societe de L'Art Brut and painted the humorous and ironical series of portraits entitled 'More beautiful than you think'.  
  1955 Moved to Vence.  
  1956 From 1956 he constructed large sculptures from small, jigsaw like pieces. These structures, resembling mountain ranges, could be expanded into architectural forms.  
  1959-68 Participation in documenta 2 in Kassel.  
  1960 Musical experiments with Asger Jorn.  
  1967 First architectural environments.  
  1968 Participation in documenta 4 in Kassel.  
  1973 Retrospective at Guggenheim Museum in New York, where his surrealist play Coucou Bazar was performed.  
  1976 Presented his Art Brut collection to the city of Lausanne.
