Marcel Duchamp

 
DUCHAMP Marcel, born 1887 Blainville Crevon -1968 Neuilly-sur-Seine
French artist.

Studied at the Academic Julian in Paris and was first influenced by Cézanne, then by the Fauves, the Cubists and Futurists.
 
  1913 With his 'Bicycle Wheel' on a stool he coined the term "readymade" for mass-produced articles. He held the view that the choosing of subject matter is an integral part of the creative process.  
  1915 Went to New York and, together with Man Ray, Picabia, Crotti and Marius de Zayas, founded the pre-Dada group around Arensberg and Stieglitz, the Society of Independent Artists and in  
  1920 with Katherine Dreyer and Man Ray, the Sociéte anonyme, Museum of Modern Art 20.  
  1921 Published 'New York Dada' with Man Ray.  
  1925 Construction of the optical machines 'Rotating Hemispheres'.  
  1936 Participation in the exhibitions 'International Surrealist Exhibition' in London and "Fantastic Art, Dada, Surrealism" at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.  
  1938 Project for the portable museum Boîtes-en-Valise which contained most of the artist's works reproduced on a smaller scale.  
  1951 Member of the Collège de Pataphysique.  
  1957 Exhibition "Les Frères Duchamp" at Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.  
  1967 Published Boîte blanche (Notes on the Large Glass) at Cordier & Ekstroem in New York.  
  1968 Participation in the exhibition "Dada, Surrealism and their Heritage" at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.  
 
Since Duchamp's anti-art radically challenged traditional concepts of art and anticipated numerous later developments, he is regarded as one of the most important avant-garde artists and a central figure in 20th century art.
