FRANCIS Sam (Samuel Lewis Francis);
born 1923 San Mateo, California - 1994 Santa Monica, California.
American painter.

 
 

1941-43

Studied botany and medicine at Berkeley. Military service in the US Army Air Corps.
 
  1944 Spinal injury in a plane crash. Taught himself to paint while bedridden.
 
  1948-50 Studied painting and history of art, among other teachers, under Rothko and Still. Travelled around the world, stopping in Mexico, India, Japan and Thailand. Early paintings influenced by Abstract Expressionism.
 
  until 1949 He painted irregular, cell-like patches of color with thinned oil or acrylic paints.
 
  1950 After 1950 his characteristic patches and blot patterns flowed into one another, forming monochromes.
 
  1956 Wall paintings for the Kunsthalle, Basel.
 
  1958 Took part in the exhibition 'New American Painting' that was shown in eight European cities.
 
  1959 Participation in documenta 2 in Kassel.
 
  1963 Moved to Santa Monica, California.
 
  1964 Participation in documenta 3 in Kassel.
 
  1969 Honorary doctorate from the University of Berkeley.
 
  1973 Visited Japan.
 
  1974 Returned to California.
 
  1977-1983 Exhibitions in Copenhagen, Paris, Boston and St.Paul.
 
 
Besides being one of the chief exponents of Action Painting in America, Sam Francis worked in other materials such as clay and ceramics and also used techniques such as lithographs and monotypes.
