GORKY Arshile, (Vosdanig Manoog Adoian) 1905 Hayotz-Dzore (Turkish Armenia) - 1948 Sherman (CT) Armenian-born American painter. |
|||
| 1920 | Emigrated
to the USA. First auto-didactic attempts at painting clearly influenced
by Cezanne's works. |
||
| 1920-1922 | Studied
at Rhode Island School of Design. |
||
| 1923/24 | Taught
at the New School of Design in Boston. |
||
| 1930's | Exhibitions
of Surrealist Art in New York in the 30s introduced him to the works of
Picasso, Miró, and Masson, and inspired experiments with biomorphic
forms. |
||
| 1941 | From
1941 worked with luminous grounds and calligraphic lines. |
||
| 1947 | Abandoned
Surrealism and spoke out against Abstract Expressionism, although he had
a fundamental influence on painters in this movement. |
||
After paralysing his right hand in a car accident, he commited suicide. With his Color Fields and hybrid forms, Gorky played a key role in the development of Abstract Expressionism in America. |
