Morris Graves

GRAVES Morris, (Morris Cole Graves), born 1910 -

American Painter.

Morris Graves, from the Pacific Northwest, is nationally known for his metaphysical paintings of birds, chalices, snakes and flowers. His national reputation began in 1942 with the Museum of Modern Art's exhibition "Americans 1942 18 artist from 9 States."

He lived for several years in England. His art is infused with mystical symbolism, with the bird as a recurring motif. At an early age he was attracted to Eastern religion and philosophy, an interest reinforced by travel to Asia between 1928 and 1930. Soon after meeting Mark Tobey, Graves began to experiment with a calligraphic style derived from Tobey's 'white writing' although he was equally indebted to Japanese and Chinese precedents.

Graves and Tobey were grouped with the Abstract Expressionists in a 1949 New York exhibition, but Graves never abandoned his visionary, representational content.
