Wassily Kandinsky

 
KANDINSKY Wassily, 1866 Moscow - 1944 Neuilly-sur-Seine, (near Paris).
Russian painter and art theoretician.

 
  1886-92 Studied law in Moscow.
 
  1893 Taught at Moscow University.
 
  1896 Moved to Munich.
 
  1897 Attended the private school run by Anton Azbè.
 
  1900 Transferred to the Munich Academy to study under Franz von Stuck.
 
  1901 Co-founder of the artists'group 'Phalanx'.
 
  1902 Meeting with Münter.
 
  1903-08 Trips with Münter to Italy, France, Switzerland, Tunisia and Russia.
 
  1908 Returned to Munich, acquaintance with Werefkin and Javlensky; first study trip to Murnau.
 
  1909 Chairman of the 'Neue Künstlervereinigung' (New Artists' Association) in Munich. Moved with Münter to Murnau. Influenced by the Fauves and discovered Bavarian glass painting.
 
  1910 Friendship with Marc.
 
  1911 Resigned from the 'Neue Künstlervereinigung' and set up, with Marc, the editorial committee of the 'Blauer Reiter'.
 
  1912 Published the book 'Concerning the Spiritual in Art' and the 'Blauer Reiter' almanac.
 
  1913 First abstract watercolour painting, later predated to 1910. Participated in the 'First German Autumn Salon' in Berlin.
 
  1914 Returned to Russia on the outbreak of war.
 
  1916 Final separation from Münter.
 
  1918 Professor at the State Art Workshops in Moscow.
 
  1921 Co-founder of the 'Academy of Artistic Sciences' in Moscow.
 
  1822-33 Teacher at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau.
 
  1924 Co-founder of the group 'Die Blauen Vier', with Feininger, Klee and Javlensky.
 
  1926 Publication of his book 'Point and Line to Plane'.
 
  1928 Took German citizenship.
 
  1933 Moved to Paris.
 
  1939 Became a French citizen.
 
 
In his last years, he came closer to Arp and Miro and began to favour organic forms and a brighter palette
