Jules Olitski

OLITSKI Jules, born 1922, Snovsk.
Russian born American painter.

Largely abandoning the traditional method of using a paint brush, Olitski has stained and sprayed the acrylic paint onto the canvases. This rejection of textural brushstrokes, and the interest in the visual sensation of color is typical of a group of artists whose work was known as Post-Painterly Abstraction.
Olitski gradually moved towards this technique in the 1960s; his earlier works were paint-laden canvases executed in subdued colors.

Born in Russia, Olitski went to art school in New York, going on to teach in America. As well as painting, he has also produced sculptures mad from aluminium and sprayed with colored paint.
