Ad Reinhardt

 
REINHARDT Ad, also known as Adolph Frederick Reinhardt,
born 1913 Buffalo - 1967 New York;
American painter.

 
  1931-37 Studied art history at Columbia University in New York under Meyer Schapiro and others.
 
  1936 Began studying painting at the National Academy of Design and at the American Artists School. 
 
  1937-47 Joined the American Abstract Artists group. During the war, worked as an art critic for a magazine in New York and photographed for the Marines. Continued his art history studies after the war at the Institute of Fine Arts in New York and specialiced in Far Eastern art. 
 
  from 1947 Taught at Brooklyn College and other American schools and universities.
 
  1952/53 First European trip.
 
  1955 First exhibition of 'Black Paintings'.
 
  1960 Painted nothing else but black squares, all of the same size.
 
  1965 Became active in the peace movement, protesting against the Vietnam War.
 
  1967 Awarded a Guggenheim grant.
 
  1968 Participation in the documenta 4 in Kassel.
 
 
In a logical continuation of Mondrian's abstract painting style and using a minimal palette, Reinhardt strove to achieve a purist, self-sufficient art. His black paintings are the product of this endeavour.
