RIOPELLE, Jean-Paul; born 1923 Montreal, Canada
Canadian painter.

 
  1940-42 Studied mathematics at the Polytechnic, Montreal. Inspired to take up painting by André Breton's essay Surrealism and Painting.
 
  1946 Participation at the International Surrealist exhibitions in New York and Paris. European travels and acquaintanceship with Breton.
 
  1947 Moved to Paris; contact with P. Waldberg, Soulages, Mathieu, Wols and others.
 
  1949 Solo-exhibition at the Nina Dausset gallery, Paris.
 
  1951/55 and 1955 participation at the Sao Paulo Biennale and,
 
  1954 1954, at the Venice Biennale.
 
  1959 participation in documenta 2 in Kassel.
 
  1962 Art prize awarded by UNESCO in Paris.
 
  1964 participation in documenta 3 in Kassel.
 
  1972 Solo-exhibition at the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
 
  1981 Retrospective at the Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris.
 
 
Riopelle's main influences were P.- E. Borduas and the Surrealists. The main body of his work can be placed between Abstract Expressionism and the Ecole de Paris.
