Pierre Soulages

 


Pierre Soulages, born 1919 Rodez, Aveyron, France - lives in Paris
French painter.

  1938 Went to Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts but returned home after a short time without completing the course.
 
  1943 Discovered abstract art, and came to know Sonia Delaunay.
 
  1946 Moved to Courbevoie.
 
  1947 Set up his own studio in Paris. Became acquainted with Picabia, Hartung and Leger. First works exhibited at the Salon des Surindependants.
 
  1949 First solo-exhibition at the Galerie Lydia Conri, Paris.
 
  1949-51 Stage and costume designs.
 
  1953 Prize for Painting at the Sao Paulo Biennale.
 
  1955 Participation in documenta 1 in Kassel.
 
  1960/61 First retrospective at the Kestner Society, Hanover, the Folkwang Museum, Essen, and the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague.
 
  1964 Participation in documenta 3 in Kassel.
 
  1967 Retrospective at the Musee d'Art et d'lndustrie, Saint-Etienne.
 
  1979 From 1979 painted mostly in dark colours.
 
  1987 Designed a monumental tapestry for the new Ministry of Finance in Paris. Awarded a major national prize for painting in Paris.
 
  1993 Retrospective in Seoul.
 
  1995 Completed a series of stained-glass windows for the Abbey ofConques in France. In many of Soulage's paintings, broad swaths of black or dark brown hover over a pale or lightly washed ground.
